Abstract

Before the arrival of the printing machine in Indonesia in the early 20th, the multiplication of the Qur'an was carried out through the copying in manual process at various places. As a result of the traditional process of copying, the frequent errors occurred that cause differences between one manuscript to another. Some studies that have been done show that such differences are generally occurred in the aspects of rasm,(style of writing), punctuation, paper material, as well as the illuminations which were influenced by the culture of certain areas. This paper examines the five ancient manuscripts originating from the site of Girigajah. It is through a philological and codicological approaches that some unique and distinctive characters of the Manuscripts of Girigajah are known. The results show that the Manuscripts from the site of Girigajah which come from the 18th century to 19th AD, still use the form called 'rasm imlai', the vowel punctuation, the recitation formula (Tajwid) and the waqaf (the sign to stop) which is fairly complete, as well as beautiful illumination, a combination of local style and the influence of Middle Eastern style.

Abstract

This paper presents historical development of the Quranic Braille in Indonesia which is so dynamic. Based on the analysis of various sources of historical documents, the history of the copying of the Quranic Braille in Indonesia went through several phases, namely the Phase of duplication, that of adaptation and that of standardization. The emergence of these phases cannot be separated from the two of the growing streams of writing at the time, each of which was developed by Yaketunis and Wyata .The Phase of standardization becomes the most important phase because all the difference in the copying of the Qur'an in Braille can be managed to be put together, so that it became the basis of the birth of the Decision of the Minister of Religion No. 25 of 1984 on the Determination of the standard of Indonesian Quranic Mushaf, including the Qur'anic Mushaf for Braille standard.

Abstract

The article is about to describe the esoteric interpretation of Said Nursi and Fethullah Gulen, its similarities and differences. By using the theory of the social history of interpretation's thought, this paper reveals that neither Nursi nor Gulen alike use the esoteric paradigm in the interpretation of the Qur'an. Esoteric paradigm in Quranic interpretation become an effective strategy used those who live in secular milieu, so they are looking for 'cool atmosphere' in disseminating the Qur'anic to the community who are being attacked by Western civilization and the secular system. Esoteric paradigm in Qur'anic interpretation developed by Nursi and Gulen not absolutely reduces the rule of 'aql besides of qalb and ruh. All three (aql, qalb, and ruh) are used in a balanced way in wading through the ocean of the Qur'an. Besides, Nursi and Gulen refute what Goldziher said that Sufism is the foreign doctrine in Islamic tradition. The Qur'anic interpretation developed by Nursi and Gulen seems more populist interpretation rather than academic debate.

Abstract

The Qur'an and the Bible have some similarities. These similarities have invited many scholars to conduct comparative studies on these two scriptures. This paper focuses on the comparative study of the history of these two scriptures among the Western scholars. It is through this article, the very signifcant shifting in the outlook of Western scholars on the relationship of the Koran and the Bible will be seen clearly, from a negative perspective of the Koran to a positive appreciation one. The shifting was made possible by the birth of inter-textuality discipline in social and humanity studies which look that every text is unique and thus cannot be compared (incommensurable).

Abstract

This paper examines the hierarchy of language in Ibrīz li Ma’rifah at-Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-‘Azīz. The hierarchy of language in the local interpretation of the Qur’an by Musthofa Bisri can be used as a new method in the interpretation of the Qur’an particularly for the local interpretation of the Qur’an of the Archipelago. In this case, there are four levels of language in the hierarchy in the interpretation of Al-Ibriz. The first is called the the Ngoko (rough language). The second is called Madya or regular or intermediate language, the third is called Kromo or polite language, and the the fourth is called Kromo Inggil or the most polite language. The Ngoko, Kromo, and Kromo Inggil are the languages used at the time of dia-logue based on social strata. For example between the the high and the low such as the dialogue between the God (Allah) and the Prophets, the Maria (Maryam) and the angel, the Prophet Isa and his people. At the regular or intermediate level, Bisri Musthofa interprets the verses by using the regular or intermediate language regular language which means that Bisri uses the language that has been widely used by the Javanese people, either in the form of explanation of the verses or the dialogue such as the dialogue of the people of the heaven/paradise and that of the hell.

Abstract

The signifcance of the revelation or the Word of God has been the subject of the study for a long time, both for Muslims and non-Muslims scholars, especially when the revelation transformed from one thing to another, such as the Koran which was frst in the form of Kalamullah, to the form of pronunciation or memory and then becomes something which is written. The following brief article tries to present the revelation in the Orientalist perspective, Stefan Wild. Before going to the realm of revelation, the author tries to portray the Wild position among the works that have been done by other orientalists.
